DIY crochet Halloween bags

Trick or Treat!!

My children are too young to go ‘Trick or Treating’ but I couldn’t resist making them a little bag to put their treats (that i will undoubtedly end up giving them) in. They are not as time-consuming as they might look – and if you love crochet as much as I do they are the perfect project to occupy a couple of autumn evenings! What’s great is that they can be used year after year, unlike the disposable plastic versions.

I made a chunky ‘Frankenstein’ bag for my son as the aran yarn crochets up bigger, and for my youngest, a little pumpkin using double knit weight yarn.

You will need:

  • Aran yarn (I used Style Craft in colour ‘meadow’)
  • DK yarn (Style Craft in ‘sunshine’)
  • crochet hooks 3mm and 5mm
  • small amount of aran black yarn & white dk yarn
  • tapestry needle
  • 2 black buttons

1. to make Frankenstein: crochet a flat circle with 5 rounds in green aran yarn and 5mm hook

1st round: magic circle, chain 3 (1dc) make 11 more dc into the ring (12 dc in total) pull magic circle to neaten first round, slip stitch into top of 1st dc stitch. (12 stitches)

always start new round with chaining 3 (counts as 1 dc) and finishing round with a slip stitch

2nd round: increase by dc twice into each stitch (24 stitches)

3rd round: increase every other stitch

4th round: increase every two stitches

5th round: increase every three stitches, join with a slip stitch at end of round

Continue to dc without increases, 8 more rounds, to form the bucket shape

Change to black aran yarn and crochet 2 more rounds in dc to make the ‘hair’

2. To finish the Frankenstein bag, pick up 3 stitches and crochet in double crochet a handle that sits neatly at the sides of the bag (I used green here). Then crochet 2 small flat circles in dk yarn (two rounds) to make the eyes. Sew in the ends of the bag and eyes before stitching the crochet eyes into place and embroidering on a mouth and ‘stitches’ with black yarn. Finishing with sewing buttons onto the eyes for pupils.

3. To make Pumpkin:

Use the pattern as above but with the orange dk yarn, which will crochet up smaller. After crocheting a flat 5 round circle, continue to dc (without increasing) 12 more rounds. Make the handle in the same way as before, but with a 4 stitch width.

4. Finish the pumpkin using black yarn to embroider on triangle-shaped eyes and a zig-zag mouth.

And that’s it! You can obviously play around with colours and characters but I hope this crochet pattern has given you a good idea of the basic bag/bucket shape!

Happy Halloween!
